Inspection and Assessments

Inspection Services

Understanding the current condition of dams and levees is critical for dam safety. Periodic site inspections not only provide a snapshot of the current condition, but also identify changes in condition, which can serve as early indicators for potential issues. For this reason, most dam and levee projects begin with a detailed site inspection by experienced professionals. Conducting thorough site inspections extends beyond checklist completion and photo documentation and requires the collection of field measurements, data (i.e. piezometric data, seepage collection monitoring, etc.), and a detailed review of surrounding site conditions and restrictions present. At AK Hydro, our staff have experience performing more than 40 dam and levee inspections. This diverse experience has given us the ability to identify critical issues in the field before they result in costly repairs or failures.

Assessment Services

On top of routine inspections, it is also important to assess all the information available to determine if the dam is operating as designed. This evaluation includes reviewing background data, site inspection observations, potential failure modes, and semi-qualitive or quantitative risk assessments. Our team has the experience and knowledge to conduct comprehensive dam assessments to assist owners in decision-making, planning, and evaluation of repair options.
